Description: The paddle wheeler Marine City burned with great loss of life while southbound off Sturgeon Point. Its charred remains including boiler fragments, lower hull structure, and some machinery are located in very shallow water not far from shore about 1 mile north of Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary maintains seasonal moorings at many shipwreck sites. Available from May to September, the moorings make for safer diving and also protect shipwrecks from anchor damage. Sanctuary regulations require vessels to use moorings when present.
