Remenant of a post glacial great lake shoreline, consisting primarily of sand deposits. The old shoreline was disceted when the Thunder Bay River finaly cut through the barrier dune and shortened it's flow path into Lake Huron. This low sand dune formation extends from Alpena south to the community of Black River in Alcona County. Piper Road, and Sand hill road as well as the railroad follow the old shoreline.
