Littoral sands such as beach sands, runoff river sands, coastal bars and spits, were deposited when the much higher post glacial great lakes Algonquin, Warren and Nipissing flooded the land areas in eastern Alpena County. These sand features were distributed across the landscape and have created high dry islands that support red pine, jack pine, white pine, red oak, aspen and birch forests. The Norway Ridge Pathway follows some of these sand ridges.
